MTG seems to just be the first of many.… More resignations are coming.. Though Johnson keeps the gavel even if Republicans become a minority, unless 9 Republicans band together and vote for a new speaker.
This is a quote from a Senior Republican House Member.
This entire White House team has treated ALL members like garbage. ALL ….
“More explosive early resignations are coming. It’s a tinder box. Morale has never been lower. Mike Johnson will be stripped of his gavel and they will lose the majority before this term is out.”
But even falling into the minority on a relative number is NOT an automatic challenge to Johnson.
They need NINE Republicans to break ranks and vote to vacate the office Speaker.
UPDATE: But as pointed out in the comments, if the Democrats got to the majority because of vacant seats, they could force votes for anything and everything via discharge petitions, (though they would be on a 30-day delay)
And remember how the math works. For votes other than votes to elect the Speaker, the votes drop when there are vacant seats. There are currently 3 vacant seats (Sherill’s, Turner’s, and Green’s), of which 2 of them will be filled in the next 2 weeks but Sherill’s will be vacant until April
with 434 Members. (1 vacant seat) Majority is still 218 Members
With 433, It drops to 217)
with 431, it becomes 216)
So if half a dozen Republicans resign early (see my comment about who I think it will be, MTG plus five others), the magic number would be 215, which is 2 more than the Democrat’s 213.
