Repeal or Amend the Second Amendment (RASA)

Our group promotes informed discussion about repealing, re-interpreting, or amending the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, following the infamous Scalia-led decisions in Heller and McDonald. Re-interpretation under a Democratic-majority Supreme Court might be easiest. If that is not possible, then repeal or amendment may be the last recourse. (This is not the same as banning guns. Gun regulation could e.g. become a state-level issue.) We support many other interim steps, as well.

Fwiw: amending the Constitution requires two steps: First, in order to be proposed and voted on, amendments need a 2/3 vote of either:

* the US Congress (both House and Senate); or

* a national convention assembled at the request of 2/3 of the states' legislatures (= 34 states). (The latter has never been successful, to date.)

Second, to become ratified, amendments must then be approved by either:

* the legislatures of 3/4 of the states; or

* state ratifying conventions held in 3/4 of the states. (3/4 * 50 = 37.5, round up to 38.)

This will not be a quick nor easy challenge. It took nearly two centuries and a Civil War to to end slavery and amend the Constitution. Let's hope that ending gun-violence happens faster and with less loss of life. 30,000 people/year currently die from guns in the US; that rate equals America's Vietnam War death toll in just two years, our Civil War death-toll in two decades.
