On December 9th, a special election will be held to fill Georgia House Seat 121. The Democrat, Eric Gisler, is certainly an underdog, since the 2024 election went to the Republican by a 61-39 margin. But, with enough support, a win is still possible. Gisler looks like a great candidate, and if he should win, or come within a point or two, news of that surprise outcome will reverberate throughout the state of Georgia. In 2026, Georgia has some big races coming up — Senator Ossoff is up for re-election, and Keisha Lance Bottoms is running to replace Republican governor Brian Kemp.
Although a Democratic victory or a stronger than expected showing in State District 121 will not have a huge impact on the Georgia House, where I think the Republicans currently hold a 100-80 advantage, I believe it will send a message that Georgia is turning more “blue.” And it would add one more election to the string of good outcomes we have had in 2025.
