The attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6
The GOP has become Trump’s bagman. I don’t think the reason for this is complex. The basic cause is the initial point where they sold their souls to him. The 2016 primary was the point of no return. Many of them denounced him (Cruz, Rubio, Graham etc.) until he won the primary, then they kissed his feet. They allowed Trump to use them because, in their arrogance and greed, they believed they could control him and consolidate their power forever. Their arrogance is so overpowering many of them still don’t understand they’re carrying water for a mob boss.
Slowly, they are learning they can’t control him, and the consolidation of power they seek is proving more difficult to achieve than they thought. The polls and recent elections show this. Yet, they won’t denounce him because they would have to admit that selling their souls may not have been wise. The arrogance of their world view, which tilts toward authoritarianism, won’t let them admit this. Perhaps they should have read “The Art of the Deal”.
Given what’s at stake here, the Republican party must be knocked down a few pegs. And, I believe it is slowly happening. They are being crushed under the weight of Trump’s own incompetence. The so called “28-point peace deal,” is only the most recent example of how incompetent Trump and his administration are. In the last couple days, the way this was handled blew up in his face. The entire free world is pissed at Trump, and by association, Congress. This is not a good look for a party that, above all else, wants to appear righteous and invincible.
The GOP is caught up in Trump’s demise because they are complicit in his corruption, lies and incompetence. They licked his feet and helped sell his snake oil, which allowed them to get control of the government. They asked for him, they got him, and now they can’t wash off his smell. He is a rotting, stinking, lame duck, and they can’t escape his constant quacking. It’s not going to end well for them.
