Thanksgiving
For 40 years at the farm we gave a large Thanksgiving dinner gathering. It began as a celebration for family, but as time went on it included extended family, then close friends, then even friends of friends. It was always a warm and enjoyable event, but gradually become a little unwieldy and the volume of conversation made communication more and more difficult. Before eating we all sang ---------with fluctuating results depending on the pre-dinner libations.
It was always potluck, and folks became known for their specialties, such that providing certain dishes was expected. Thinking back I’m amazed how complex it was: we always did one large turkey in the oven and BBQed another one outside (often braving the icy fog) which we divided up such that each guest could take home some turkey for the next day.
Planning for this year’s Thanksgiving we invited our local kids: son and D-I-L. The paper listed 30 local restaurants which were having a Thanksgiving special, but they chose one which has always been their favorite. Popular and pretty booked, so we’re going at 7:45 PM, which will be unusual for us. This requires that I have a late afternoon private feast. I will treat myself well; don’t I always?
What are y’all doing for Thanksgiving? Restaurant? Traditional home gathering? Deli? Tofu? Cranberries?
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
