The results in Virginia this year were way beyond expectations on both the state-wide and house district levels. A significant part of this was our “run in every district” project in which Democrats fielded candidates in all 100 districts, racking up over 100,000 votes that expanding Democrats’ margins in the state-wide races. On the other hand, Republicans left 17 Democratic seats unopposed, leaving hundreds of thousands of statewide votes on the table.
Thanks to all of you, especially Zen Trainer’s stories and Charles Gaba, whose Virginia Value Pack 27 helped raise over $146,000 for these 27 candidates.
The momentum of these victories carries on in at least two ways happening right now.
First, energized progressives are moving to take over local committees in rural districts. Cindy Green, the candidate in District 44, is moving to help progressives become leaders in local committees, and lay the basis for long-term Democratic success in red areas.
Second, the election of State Senator Ghazala Hashimi as Lieutenant Governor creates a vacancy in her State Senate seat. This creates a primary between the two Democratic House of Delegates members in her Senate District. This in turn will create a vacancy in one of those two seats, and another primary. These special elections will happen in a matter of weeks.
This creates an opportunity to field and promote progressive candidates in these cascading primaries.
Stay tuned!
