500,000 Christmas Boxes will be distributed at 132 sites
Granted this will only be for 500,000 families. That is out of around 4.5 million Panamanians. So about 9%.
But at least it is something. And the government will pay for over half the cost of the food. The boxes will have “rice, sugar, salt, pigeon peas, and a picnic ham…”
President Mulino has also commented that the skyscrapers in Panama City are only ten minutes away from poverty. Panamanians in my circles seem to have mixed opinions regarding President Mulino. I suspect they are generally fatigued from so very many years of corruption. He has been in office for about a year and a half and won the job with only 34% of the vote. There seemed to be 8 candidates running. Yet from my expat POV, Mulino seems to be trying to fix things.
After all, in no way can I imagine the PINO of the US saying this...
“The people deserve a peaceful Christmas, without having to suffer for food,” Mulino stated.
