Trump claims he wants to improve affordability, but he is doing everything he can thing of to make things less affordable. Some examples.
- Exhibit A is tariffs. Tariffs are a tax. Guess who pays the tax. American consumers, of course.
- Energy costs. Energy is an important part of the household budget. At this point, renewable energy is less expensive than energy from fossil fuels. But Trump is waging a war on renewable energy.
- Health insurance. The Big Ugly Bill makes massive cuts in Obamacare and Medicaid, making health care either more expensive or simply unavailable for the tens of millions of Americans who rely on these programs.
- Deporting undocumented immigrants. Trump campaigned on deporting “the worst of the worst”. That, of course, is not what he is doing. But what are the economic consequences of deporting undocumented immigrants? Employers have to pay legal immigrants or US citizens more to do the work that undocumented immigrants were doing. This obviously raises costs that are passed along to the consumer.
